This generation hit the roads in 2016, and with it came a new build. Despite being 4 inches longer, giving the interior more room, this model is also more fuel efficient. This is because it is nearly 300 pounds lighter than the previous generation.
For the regular gas-powered Malibu, you can look for up to 30 MPG on the most efficient engine. This gives you up to 390 miles on one tank, according to the EPA.
This engine is the 1.5L turbocharged engine that comes standard on all models. A 2.0L turbocharged engine is offered, but no V6 is available as the other engines are inline four (I4) engines.
If you’re looking for the most efficient model, then you can look for a hybrid model. While it was only around until 2019, if you manage to find one, it will be good for you at the pump, and when the weather gets cold.
The obvious feature about hybrids is the fuel economy. Coming with a 1.8L I4, this engine can get 598 miles of range, getting 46 MPG combined as tested by the EPA.
A less obvious feature is the Exhaust Gas Heat Recovery system. This warms up the engine and helps keep the cabin warm when the temperatures start to get colder. This is a must-have for those who live in New York.
When the hybrid was discontinued, the model had seen a new trim join the lineup. This is the RS trim. It comes with a sportier appearance, thanks to a black grille, 18-inch wheels, and a dual exhaust.
If you find an L, LS, RS, or LT trim, you’ll find that it comes with an 8-inch infotainment screen, while the Premier and Hybrid trims come with an HD version.
If you find a 2019 and later Premier model, you’ll be treated to heated second-row seats. This ensures that your passengers will be comfortable no matter what.
Over the next few years, the model saw a handful of changes. In 2022, the L was discontinued, while the Premier was replaced with the 2LT in the next year. By 2024, production had ended, with no new generation being planned.
