The Corolla is one of the best-selling vehicles of all time, and having been around since 1966, this model has gone through its trials and tribulations to make it the best vehicle it can be. We’ll be taking a look at some of the generations and their years to see which is right for you. Here is what to look for when buying a used Toyota Corolla.
Key Takeaways:
- If you like manual transmissions, you want something before 2022.
- The Apex Corolla is one of the most unique models you can get, even more so if you manage to find a manual transmission.
- If you want the most efficient model available, then you want a hybrid. It can get 52 MPG.
Ninth Generation (2000-2007)
While this generation debuted in Japan in 2000, it was delayed for the North American market until 2002. When it hit the roads here in North America, it was a larger design.
It came with three trim levels: the CE, LE, and S. The Classic Edition (CE) came with manual windows and locks. The Luxury Edition (LE) came with mock-wood interior accents. While the Sport (S) trim came with a rear spoiler and 15-inch 6-spoke aluminum alloy wheels.
Tenth Generation (2008-2014)
Much like this last generation, this one comes with a different exterior to the Japanese version. Thanks to the new styling, it looks similar to the Camry. Thanks to the addition of the new electronic power steering system and upgraded suspension, this model comes with smoother handling.
This generation saw even more trim levels. These were the S, LE, XLE, and XRS. The XRS was similar to the Sport (S) by having a spoiler and underskirts, but it came with a larger engine.
The CE, S, and XRS trims can be found with manual transmissions, making them even more desirable to those who want something unique. When 2011 hit the market, the XRS and XLE trims were removed.
For the 2021 model, you can now find USB ports on the stereo, Bluetooth, and steering audio controls on the wheel for the LE trim. Some safety features that come standard are dual front airbags, front and rear side curtain airbags, and front-row side airbags.
Eleventh Generation (2015-2018)
This generation comes as a compact car and comes with 4 trims. These are the L, LE, LE Eco, and S. For this generation, Toyota decided to focus more on fuel efficiency.
Two- and four-cylinder engines were offered for this year. One producing 132 horsepower and the other producing 140 horsepower. The stronger one is on the Eco trim. The most fuel-efficient is also the Eco, and it has an estimated 34 MPG combined. It is capable of getting 40 mpg on the highway, making it a great vehicle for long road trips.
No matter what engine you decide on, you can find either a four-speed automatic, a six-speed manual, or even a CVT. Making it a friendly vehicle to all who have transmission preferences.
The 2015 model saw the addition of the Special Edition Corolla based on the S model. This came with glossy black 17-inch wheels, red stitching for tons of interior parts, and Special Edition floor mats.
2017 saw the mid-cycle facelift. This came with a restyled front fascia and new light designs, and the interior came with a new seven-inch touch screen.
Twelfth Generation (2019- Present)
This generation was the first one to offer a hybrid engine. This engine had an EPA rating of 52 MPG combined. But this range is only on the hatchback model.
When 2020 came around, the saloon was introduced. This came with 3 trims: the L, LE, and XLE. No matter the trims you get, you have a 4.2-inch multi-information display, Entune 3.0 infotainment display, that comes with Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and, in 2021, Android Auto.
The hatchback model only came in S and XSE trims. Giving the hatchback a sportier look and feel. Making is the perfect choice for those who want something practical and stylish.
If you want something more capable, then in 2021, you can find the Apex. As the name implies, this is the top of the food chain. Based on the SE and XSE saloon models, this brings performance to an unassuming model. This comes with stiffer and lowered springs, anti-roll near, and 18-inch black alloy wheels. With only 6,000 units made, only 120 came with a manual transmission. Making these desirable and rare for those who can drive them.
In 2022, the Corolla was refreshed. Coming with minor design changes and mechanical changes. The new standard engine is the 169-horsepower I4. This year also saw the removal of the 6-speed manual transmission.
